The Linksys BEFCMU10 version 3 cable modem was our solution to a strange bandwidth problem. We noticed our Internet was impossibly slow at certain times of the day. Charter Communications (ISP at that time) sent techs to diagnose the problem, but they couldn’t figure out what was wrong. The signal was fine, they even swapped modems with another one they had with them.
This had us stumped until we realized there had been large powerful thunderstorms in the area around the time we started to notice the trouble with our bandwidth. Turns out the Charter techs had swapped my fried modem with another one that the storms had fried. So both had the same low (made dialup seem fast) bandwidth.
We only found all this out after we replaced the leased modem we had from Charter with the Linksys BEFCMU10 v3 on the advice of a network administrator friend of ours’ (Steve from ATCMI). This was all several years ago in maybe the late 90’s.
The Linksys corrected the problem and provided up to about 8 mb down and about 2.5 mb up of bandwidth in our testing. This might have been due to our router as we have heard the Version 3 is capable of much more bandwidth than our tests have shown.
Overall we used this as the main modem for our business for over 5 years with no problems. Our net connection is used to the fullest extent. We run VoIP and constantly use ftp for uploading and downloading not to mention typical Internet use and then there are Netflix and other video streaming sites such as YouTube.
We feel the average user will be very happy with this modem. Be aware, you may want to look for a modem that is DOCSIS 3.0 compliant. Many cable companies are moving up to this standard and you could see significant gains in your bandwidth without having to pay more for your monthly bill.
This device is very good because it gives a high speed internet connection.I highly recommend this device to everyone it will give a big help to those who suffer poor internet connections.

Setup involves an awkward looking web-based config however, once you obtain the right settings from your broadband provider the fields are easy to fill in fact, for me the default settings just worked . There is a CD based config package which is PC only. As a Mac user I couldn’t use it. Perhaps this makes the config easier.One further potential problem for the wifi newbie. The unit is provided without wireless security enabled by default a pretty bad practice, which encourages poor security in the uninitiated.Still, for the technically competent, however, this router is a dream. Once set up the performance is astonishing I had not imagined how much my old router was holding me back! Even webbrowsing is faster now. Wireless transfers of large files are very fast and smooth.Very very impressed. I strongly recommend this router.Oh yeah, and it looks very cool too. Edit: Oh dear. One week later and I am returning the unit to Amazon. Why? The unit has a very annoying bug after it has been running for 48hours or so all apple Bonjour services are blocked this means that Apple to Apple networking stops working. I have the similar Router but I use an SB6121 by Motorola for my Modem because it has the higher speed using a DOCSIS 3.0 instead of the DOCSIS 2.0 this one has. The nice thing about this one, however, is the price! Most cable provider now ask you use the 3.0 now though I think. Thanks for the post and the clarification about DOCSIS 3.0 at the bottom too.
